Midsole / Cushioning
Uses compression-molded EVA (CMEVA) foam that’s softer than prior versions. There’s more foam underfoot in this Challenger 8 than the Challenger 7.
The stack height is ~42 mm in heel and ~34 mm in the forefoot (men’s) giving a plush platform.
Drop
~8 mm heel-to-toe drop. That’s increased from previous versions.
Outsole & Lugs / Traction
4 mm multi-directional lugs for grip on dirt, gravel, and mixed surfaces.
Durabrasion rubber used for durability.
The lug orientation has been updated / reimagined to improve grip especially across varied/all-terrain surfaces.
Upper & Fit
Engineered mesh made with 100% rPET (recycled poly-ethylene terephthalate), breathable.
There is a durable rubber toe-cap / toe bumper for protection.
Plush collar and padded tongue help with comfort.
Fit improvements in the forefoot and instep; the new last gives a slightly roomier fit up front compared to V7.
Weight
About 9.7 oz (for a men’s US 9) in many listings.
Ride & Smoothness
The ride is described by testers as “hyper cushy” or plush; smooth transitions from road to trail thanks to the cushioning and slightly rocker-like feel.
Stability
With its wider base, firm heel counter, and the cushioning, it provides good stability over uneven terrain, especially moderate mixed trails where technical demands are limited.
Grip & Traction
The updated lugs provide improved bite on loose dirt, gravel, and mild trail surfaces. They aren’t super aggressive, so in very muddy, steep, or especially wet rocky terrain performance drops off.
Road-to-Trail Versatility
This shoe is meant to straddle both: comfortable on pavement, yet capable when you hit dirt or gravel. So for mixed runs (road starts, trail segments, gravel roads) it does very well.
Trade-offs / Drawbacks
Heavier than a pure road shoe or very minimal trail shoe due to added foam and protective elements.
On very technical terrain (sharp rocks, steep sloppy slopes, jungled trails), the grip and protection may be less than what a highly technical trail shoe offers.
Some durability concerns reported by users in tougher conditions (e.g. tread coming off, rubber zones wearing faster) especially on rugged or very rocky trails.
The Men's Hoka Challenger ATR 8 All Terrain Running Shoe is for runners who want a single shoe to handle mixed surfaces: commuting on pavement, running access roads or gravel, doing both dirt/trails and paved stretches. Especially good if you run 50-50 or more mixture rather than mostly technical trail.
The Men's Hoka Challenger 8 is good if you value cushioning, comfort over long runs, and want protection underfoot without going full-tech trail.
Less ideal if you spend most of your time on technical trails, very wet/slippery surfaces, or want super light gear for speed or racing.
Salida and environs have certain challenges: high elevation, varied terrain including dirt roads and access roads to trailheads, rocky singletrack, often dry but sometimes wet/muddy, lots of climbing/descending, sometimes rapid changes in weather. Here’s how the Challenger 8 stacks up:
Pros in Salida’s terrain:
The generous stack and soft ride cushion well against rocky roads, gravel, and uneven terrain, helping reduce the pounding on your joints especially on descents.
The 4 mm multidirectional lugs give enough grip for loose gravel and soil one often encounters on the forest roads, and light singletrack.
The toe protection helps when rolling over rocks, roots, or scree.
The breathable engineered mesh helps with ventilation; at Salida’s elevation and sun exposure, keeping feet cool helps mitigate blister risk and overheating.
For runs that start on pavement or roads and then shift to trails (or vice versa) — very common in this area — the Challenger 8 is built for that transition.
Considerations / What to watch out for:
In highly technical alpine trails (sharp jagged rocks, steep loose descents), or wet / muddy conditions, the grip may be borderline; you might slip, or the outsole could wear faster.
The higher drop and cushioning might feel a bit soft or less nimble on steep climbs, especially because you’ll want your toes and forefoot really responsive.
Because of elevation, hot and dry conditions might dry out and stress upper materials or rubber, so breaking them in carefully helps.
Weight isn’t excessive, but on long climbs the extra mass vs lighter trail shoes is felt.
The Men's Hoka Challenger 8 is a well-balanced road-to-trail hybrid: more cushioning and comfort than many light trail shoes, better grip and protection than many road shoes. If you live in a place like Salida, with mixed terrain, gravel, road sections, and frequent access to more rugged singletrack, it’s a strong choice. It won’t replace a serious technical trail shoe for super rough terrain or races, nor will it be your lightest speed weapon on pavement, but for most of the day-in, day-out miles, it hits a sweet spot.
